How To Grow Lovage

It has been a while since the last time we looked at growing some herbs at home. I think the last time we looked at how to grow anise or was it how to grow fennel or maybe how to grow marjoram? I don’t quite remember! LOL Anywho, today we shall be taking a look at how to grow lovage.

The scientific name is Levisticum officinale and it has its origins in southern Europe. To be honest I only discovered this herb recently, but ever since I love using it in my meals. I use it mainly in stews as well as soups, because of its celery like flavor. I know some people also use it in salads and others use the leaves to make tea. This is one of those ‘special’ plants that you can use almost everything on it from the leaves, to the stems, roots as well as the seeds.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

The best way to grow this herb, is to start your seeds indoors about 2 months before the last frost in spring. When sowed about 1/4″ deep the seeds will take up to 2 weeks to germinate. Eventually when the ground is warm enough you can transplant into a location that gets full sun in your garden.

As with most plants, make sure that you water well. The other good thing is that there are no pests or diseases that affect this herb. If all goes well, it should be ready for harvest within 3 months. Whatever you do, do not wash the leaves before or you will lose most if not all of the aromatic flavor. Harvest just enough to use fresh, although you can store it in freezer bags or dry it for future use.
