Usually when we growing plants in the garden, they are either a herb or a vegetable. What if I told you that some plants can be both. Yep, you read that right. With that in mind let us take a look at how to grow fennel, in today’s post. Shall we?
There are two main varieties when it comes to fennel. There is the Foeniculum vulgare, which is also known as the herb fennel and there is the Foeniculum dulce, which is also known as the Florence fennel. The latter is what the chefs prefer to use when cooking, whilst the other one is mostly used for medicinal purposes. I love mine grilled but you can also eat them raw, stew, bake and some simply boil them.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- fennel seeds
- compost
- small container
- seedling tray
- mini greenhouse (optional)
Although you can transplant fennel, it is actually not recommended. Find an area with well drained soil, that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight everyday in your garden. Mark your rows 2 feet apart and plant your seeds in early fall or late spring, 12 to 14 inches apart in the rows about half an inch deep. Lightly cover with soil and give the patch a good watering. Best temperatures for growth are between 70 to 75 degrees F.
Ideally, the soil should be kept moist at all times. The drier the soil the more split stalks you will have. Keep an eye out for aphids, thrips, slugs, snails, powdery mildew as well as collar and root rot. One plant can grow up to 6 feet tall and 2 feet wide. They should be ready for harvest between 90 to 120 days. You can enjoy everything from the shoots, roots, leaves, bulbs to the seeds.
