How To Grow Spearmint

Herb gardening is a great way to keep the gardening thumbs busy especially in colder months. I have adopted by establishing different types of herb gardens such as the diy hanging herb garden planter, diy herb garden spiral and the diy tin can herb garden. Today however, I would like us to take a look at how to grow spearmint.

Spearmint (Mentha Spicata) is a member of the mint family, which includes other herbs such as the peppermint. Although this herb can be grown in your outside garden, it is recommend that you grow them in containers. This will help contain it as it may become a handful, if left to take over the garden. Not only are they plants hardy and perennial, they also help keep ants and aphids at bay which is an added advantage.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

It is recommended that your start your seeds indoors at least 2 months before the last frost. Generally germination under grow lights will take anything from 12 to 16 days. When it is time to transplant, plant your seedlings in soil that is rich and well draining in a sunny location at least 3 feet apart for best results. When companion planting pair them with kolrahbi, cabbage, kale and broccoli.

Very little maintenance is required, just keep your plants well watered and regularly apply fertilizer in Spring. Diseases and pests to keep an eye out for include ealybug, whitefly, aphids, and spider mites. The leaves are also highly susceptible to rust. Harvest the leaves when the plant is about 6 to 8 inches high. Use them fresh or dry them to preserve for future use.
