How To Compost Horse Manure

As a composting enthusiast, it is natural to get a little excited when you discover new materials or methods. We have already looked at trench composting and diy 3 bin compost system in previous blog posts. Although we don’t have horses on our homestead, I was still keen to learn the basics of how to compost horse manure.

I was surprised to find out that it is just like all the other composting methods that you may already be familiar with. As a waste disposal vehicle this is an environmentally friendly option. Apparently after the manure has been composted the piles are half their original size. You can throw in a whole bunch of other organic material in there such as eggshells, coffee grounds, hay bits as well as banana peels.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Ideally you want to have 3 compost bins for your compost. The first one is for the raw manure, the second with composting manure and the third one with compost that is ready for use. However, you can also use small piles if you do not have bins, just make sure that your compost is protected from the rain.

During the whole process you should be turning your compost often. Inserting a PVC pipe with holes into the bin will also help with aeration. You don’t want too much water, just enough to keep the bacteria active in the pile. Also, there should never be any bad smells emanating from your pile, if so you are doing something wrong.
