How To Grow Marjoram

It has been a while since we have done some herb gardening on this blog. I think the last time was when we looked at how to grow spearmint, or was it how to grow agrimony? Anywho, we are going to change that today, as we take a look at how to grow marjoram.

Did you know that marjoram (Origanum majoricum), is actually a member of the mint family? It is also a perennial that can be grown both indoors and outdoors. Many people tend to confuse it with oregano, however although similar the later tends to be mild and not as sweet. The leaves are usually dried before being used in soups salads, sauces, soup as well as your favorite meat dishes.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

If you are starting with seeds, it is recommended that you sow them at least 6 weeks before the last frost. Germination occurs in about a week and a half. The seedlings can then be transplanted to the garden or a small container when the weather after the last frost. Space your plants 10 to 12 inches apart.

Water occasionally , keeping an eye out for aphids, spider mites as well as mildew. Harvesting can start as early as 5 weeks after transplanting. When harvesting snip off some cuttings, which you can then hang out to dry. Once dry I carefully remove all the leaves from the stems and store them whole in a glass jar or ziploc bag.
