How To Grow Herbs In Mason Jars

Herbs are a fixture in my garden. I love to grow different herbs such as thyme, rosemary, french tarragon, saffron and lemongrass. In order to have fresh herbs all year around, we have moved some of our herbs indoors. I have even learnt how to plant herbs in mason jars.

Although there are small containers available around here, we tend to have way more jars than we can use. This is why I decided to use some of them for my herb garden. Besides I like to diversify my growing mediums, you know what they say… don’t put all your eggs in one basket. I know the title mentions mason jars, but there is nothing stopping you from using other jars.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

The bottom layer of your jars should be consist of at least 2 inches of soil cover rocks. They allow water to seep into them, preventing any mold build up. The second later is potting soil, which should go all the way if planting seeds or leave about a third free if planting seedlings.

Seeds can just be planted directly into the soil, as for the seedlings you will have to add more potting soil, to really pack in the soil. When you water your herbs, the soil will begin to settle. Do not over water, or you your herbs will start to wilt. No more excuses, go plant some herbs.
