You whooo? LOL. Yes, I am back again with another fruit, you have probably never heard of in your life before. Just like the how to grow jackfruit and the how to grow kiwi berries posts on this blog, these tend to be be my favorite. In today’s post, we are going to be looking at how to grow yuzu citrus trees. Are you ready?
I did some quick research trying to trace the origins of this rather unique citrus tree. Apparently it is actually a hybrid of two species that both originate from China. We are talking about the Citrus ichangensis and the mandarin. Other interesting features besides the ‘wings’ on the leaf stalks include the fact that it self pollinates as well as bearing large yellow fruit which can often be bigger than grapefruits. When full grown you can expect the tree to be about 12 feet tall.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- young yuzu trees
- containers or pots
- potting mix
- organic fertilizer
- compost
You can grow your yuzu tree both in the backyard orchard as well as indoors in pots. Outside you should plant it in a location that receives full sun, with well-drained soil that is also slightly acidic. Indoors just find a suitably sized pot, that you is easy to carry, since you will have to bring the pots inside when outside temperatures get too cold. I could not find any information on whether they can be grown from seed, but I assume since most citrus trees can, they can too.
Make sure that you water well, and leave the soil to dry out before you give it more water. There are really no pests or diseases you should be worried about as far as these trees are concerned. The tree starts flowering in Spring, but the fruit are usually ready for harvest in Winter when they turn yellow. In Japan, they use this fruit in drink, sauce and dessert recipes. However, you can just use it whenever you need lemons, they make a great substitute. 🙂
