Oh yes! I hope you are ready for today’s blog post. It is about to get nutty on here! LOL. We have already looked at how to grow cashew nuts, how to grow hazelnuts and how to grow almonds from seeds in earlier posts. It occurred to me the other day, that we still had to explore how to grow pecans from seed on here.
Their scientific name is Carya illinoinensis and like many other nuts, they actually grow on trees. I personally didn’t know that they are actually native to northern Mexico and southern United States. You can expect the tree to grow as tall as 131 feet. You can enjoy them uncooked, however you must also try some pecan pie. They are a rich source of fat, protein, manganese, magnesium, phosphurus, zinc, thiamin, iron and Vitamin B.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- pecan seeds
- knife
- 1-gallon sealable bag
- perlite---------------------- Advertisement ----------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------- - 2-gallon nursery containers
- loam
- horticultural sand
- mulch
- cold frame
- garden hose
In order to increase your chances of success, make sure that you careful select the fruit you will be extracting the seeds from. Then these have to be cold stratified for at least 2 to 3 months before they are ready to be planted. The seeds will be planted in the nursery containers filled with a mixture of horticultural sand and loam. Then acidic mulch applied over the top to provide insulation.
The containers will then be watered, and kept inside the cold frame. Germination will occur when the daytime temperatures start averaging above 70 degrees F. It is recommended you leave them in the containers for the first summer, just make sure that these containers are exposed to maximum sunlight and don’t forget to water regularly.
