Ready or not, here it comes. Yes, today we will be looking at a fruit that you probably have not heard of yet. Just like when I showed you other not so popular fruits like how to grow loquats and how to grow bitter melons. How would you like to to learn how to grow kiwi berries, in your backyard.
Their scientific name is Actinidia Arguta, but they are also sometimes known as cold hardy kiwi, kiwi grapes, or baby kiwi. They are smaller than their ordinary kiwi cousins, and do not need to be peeled when you eat them. Make sure you select the right variety for your zone, that way you can be sure of a good harvest. When you buy your plants, you want to buy both a male and a female, otherwise there will be no fruit production.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
The best location for your vines is on either the north or east side of a building. You don’t want them to have full sun all day, shade in the afternoon is recommended. When planting you want one male for every 6 female plants. In row spacing of about 10 feet between plants will be ideal. It will take at least 3 years and sometimes up to 5 for your vines to start fruiting.
When it comes to maintenance, regular pruning ensures that you keep in control of the growth of the vine. Apply mulch to conserve water, and water at least once a week. There are no diseases or pests to worry about. However, rabbits may become a problem in the cooler seasons. The berries are usually ready for harvest between July and September every year.
