How To Grow Cabbage In Plastic Bags

By now, most of us should be living green and using these diy pillowcase eco shopping bags when we go grocery shopping. In earlier blog posts we’ve already covered how to grow cabbage in pots and how to grow red cabbage. This is obviously one of the more popular vegetables. Would you like to learn how to grow cabbage in plastic bags? That’s a silly question, of course you do! Why else would you be reading this post, huh? LOL

Who doesn’t love these gardening hacks, that not only save you money but are also environmentally friendly. Instead of throwing away your plastic shopping bags, you can reuse them as containers for growing cabbage on your patio or the backyard garden. In order for your cabbage to form big heads, you will need to grow them in large containers. This means your shopping bag should be at least 12 to 18 inches in diameter for best results. No additional fertilizer is required, especially if you opt to use the kitchen and garden waste.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1.

Add a layer of garden soil at the very bottom of your bag.

Step 2.

Add a layer of garden waste first over the soil, followed by a layer of kitchen waste. (optional)

Step 3.

Add another layer of garden soil over the waste.

Step 4.

For the top ‘growing’ layer, mix your sand, compost and garden soil.

Step 5.

Shovel the soil mixture from above into the bag and then slightly roll down the edges.

Step 6.

Transplant one seedling into the center of each bag and give it a good watering.

When transplanting just make a small hole in top layer with your fingers , place the root ball of your seedling in there and then cover it up with the soil. Your garden waste will include dry leaves and grass, whilst the kitchen waste is anything from the fruit cores, peels, vegetable scraps as well as eggshells. The waste will slowly decompose over time and will provide the cabbage with much needed nutrition during the final stages of growth.
