Boom, everything turns red when beets are being consumed around here. We end up with red plates, red lips, red teeth and often times red fingers too. In previous posts I have shown you how to grow pumpkins in pots, how to grow cabbage in pots and how to grow corn in pots. With all that knowledge and experience you should not have any problems when it comes to growing beets in pots.
Generally, I really enjoy container gardening almost as much as ‘normal’ gardening. Since we are growing root vegetables, our container choice is very important. Not only is a wider pot ideal, you also want to make sure that it is at least 8 inches deep. There are a few beet varieties which are recommended for growing in containers. I have grown the Sangria variety, but you can also try the Early Wonder, Sweetheart and Detroit Dark Red.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
When you have selected the right container with adequate drainage, you can direct sow your seeds into the pot. Keep the pot in a warm location with mild sun until germination occurs within one to two weeks. After germination you can move the pot to an area that receives at least 6 hours of sun daily. At 3 inches tall you can thin out the beets to 3 inches apart in all directions.
Do not over water or water your beets from over head. I prefer mine to be organic, so after about 3 weeks I start applying compost tea bi-weekly. You can also use store bought fertilizers, refer to the article below for usage directions. Keep an eye out for leaf miners and aphids which sometimes like to feast on the leaves. It should take in the region of 6 to 9 weeks for your beets to be ready for harvesting. Happy beet rooting! 🙂
