Halloween is on the horizon, and along with it comes the pumpkin season. When it comes to your garden, I have already shown you how to grow giant pumpkins and how to build this diy wood pallet pumpkin trellis. However, I am aware that not everyone has access to land for a garden. Hence, in today’s post we will be looking at how to grow pumpkins in pots.
As with most avid gardeners, we are always open to learning new container gardening techniques. They are some noticeable, subtle differences though, that determine whether you succeed or not. For example, with pumpkins it is recommended that you use a large container, preferably one that is at least 6″ wide. Other important factors include the variety planted as well as your potting soil mixture. Generally speaking, smaller varieties are more suitable for growing in containers.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- pumpkin seeds
- 20 gallon container
- potting mix
- compost
- organic fertilizer
- panty hose
- trellis
- water retention crystals (optional)
Having a wide large container is only the beginning, you’ll have to drill drainage holes in the bottom and then prep your soil mix. The compost is worked into the potting mix and if you’re adding any water retention crystals, they should also be added into the mix. Sow a minimum of 3 seeds per pot and then thin them out at the two leaves stage.
Watering frequently is recommended with fertilizer application every couple of weeks. You may need a trellis to support your vines, therefore make sure that you have that in place. When it’s flowering time, only leave a one or two flowers per plant. During the fruit development stage, slings made from panty hoses are perfect for providing much needed support.
