How To Grow Lettuces On Your Windowsill

A fresh salad is always a nice addition to any meal as a side or even as the main dish. Lettuce usually are the main ingredients in your salads. Last season I learnt how to grow lettuces on a windowsill, the kitchen works best but any windowsill will do.

The best varieties of lettuces to plant in this area are the ones that grow again if you snip or cut the leaves. That way you will have a constant supply handy whenever you need some for your salads. Just snip the leaves, wash them and add them as needed.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • lettuce seeds
  • long slim containers or fabric bags
  • compost
  • watering can
  • scissors
  • woven willow surrounds (optional)

Prepare your containers by filling them with compost all the way, just leaving about half an inch from the the rim. Your lettuce seeds will be planted in drills that are 2″ apart and only a 1/4″ deep. The easiest way to sprinkle the seeds is from the palm of your hands controlling the flow with the big thumb and index finger into each drill.

Before watering the seeds for the first time, you should cover them very lightly with a layer of compost. Be careful and only use a light watering can the first time you water them. The compost needs to remain moist at all times and you will see your lettuce start to grow. It is ready for harvesting when the leaves are 2 to 4 inches high, snip them with a scissors leaving at least 1″ which should regrow in about 14 days.
