DIY Vegetable Garden Soil

Just like when building a house you have to make sure your foundation is well set before you go ahead and build the walls. It is the same when it comes to your gardening. Most gardeners tend to skip the important step of preparing their soil and have no idea how to create good growing soil for their vegetable garden beds.

The goal is to end up with high quality, fertile soil with good drainage. With this type of soil you can grow almost anything successfully. I admit, preparing your soil can be a lot of work or time. I just remind myself that, good soil preparation usually means bumper harvests.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • shovel
  • organic compost
  • bucket
  • fork
  • sand (optional)

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1.

Turnover the sod and grass, in the area that you want
to create your gardening bed.

Step 2.

Remove any excess green material and throw it in your compost.
This will help you reduce regrowth of the weeds and grass.

Step 3

Using your shovel dig up the full length of your bed
about 12 to 18 inches deep. This is called double digging.
Put all the dirt you dig out to the side of your bed.

Step 4.

Add a good amount of your compost into the hole you dug,
then reintroduce the soil you had set aside back into the hole.

Step 5.

Use your fork, to mix everything together well. You should
have a nice mound to create your bed after you are done.

The soil that you are left with should feel moist and crumble, if you pick it up and squeeze it in your palm. If you are left with a big lump then it is suggested that you add some sand into the mix, to improve the drainage. Happy Gardening! 🙂
