DIY Sunken Container Garden

Bury the containers in the ground, they said. You will have a bumper pepper harvest! I can literally see the confused look on your face right now! Ha ha haaa. We have made the diy plastic bucket raised garden bed and diy garden grow bags on this blog already. Therefore I am sure building this diy sunken container garden, will be a walk in the park too.

Usually when one gets involved with container gardening, there is no container separate the plant from any ground surface. This will not be the case when you setting up this type of garden. In addition there are actually two major advantages to this whole setup. For starters it will allow you to save on resources and secondly you are able to maximize space. You can grow as many as two pepper plants in each container. You can save money by reusing your containers

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1.

Lay down some cardboard in the area you want to set up your garden.

Step 2.

Use the utility knife to cut out a third, a half or the full bottom of your container out.

Step 3.

Dig holes the width of the base of your container and about 3 inches deep using the shovel.

Step 4.

Use a small hand shovel to flatten out the base of the hole, so that your container can sit flat in there.

Step 5.

For the container soil, you want to mix 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 garden soil and 1/3 raised bed garden soil mix in a wheel barrow. Also add in a handful of fertilizer and mix everything together with your hands.

Step 6.

At the bottom of each container add a two tablespoons of organic fertilzer. Fill each container with the mix you made in the step above. Leave about 2 inches of space at the top.

Step 7.

Add mulch around the sides of each container. Feel free to mould the mulch up.

Step 8.

Congratulations. Your container garden is now ready for planting! 🙂

You can plant one to 3 plants in each container, depending on how much space each plant needs to thrive. The drier the area you live in, the wider the section you have to cut out the bottom of the container. The deeper you dig the holes for your containers, the more soil you have left to fill your containers. Your soil mix can also be just half peat moss and half garden soil, ideally you want it to be able to hold moisture.
