With seed starting season upon us, I figured that one or two of you could find this idea useful. In previous posts we’ve looked at how to make this diy self watering seed starter container and this diy self watering milk jugs water. Both of them served the purpose and worked great, therefore there is no reason why this diy self watering seed starting tray, should fail us. Is there?
When you implement diy gardening hacks like these, gardening suddenly becomes more fun and affordable. Although they are often dirt cheap, you can save yourself a few extra pennies by actually reusing the trays required for this project. Although, I haven’t tried it myself I see no reason why you can’t use the plastic trays for this project. When reusing these trays, rinse them out thoroughly to remove any stuck on food or debris, otherwise you may end up having to deal with mold issues.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- seeds
- aluminium foil food trays
- toothpicks or fork
- seed starter mix
- scrap wood
- plastic bag or cover
The trays that you select for this project should be the same size as far as length and width is concerned, whilst least 3 inches deep. The drainage holes should only be punched into the bottom of one of the trays, use a toothpick or a fork for this job. I also was lucky enough to find one of those trays with the clear plastic covers that goes on top. I used that to cover the tray after planting, instead of a plastic bag. Wait until the seeds germinate before adding water to the bottom tray and hence activating the self watering aspect.
