Why don’t you be a darling and protect your plants from the harsh winter weather this year? A few years back we looked at how to build this diy straw bale cold frame and this diy add on greenhouse. You probably already have one of these diy wood pallet raised garden beds in your garden, right? What if I told you that you could easily convert them into a diy cold frame raised garden bed in just minutes?
Yep, this is one of those diy gardening projects, that enhances your whole gardening experience. I think the major benefit of building one of these is that you’ll be able to extend your gardening activities way past the first frost, as well as way before the last frost. In most cases, you should be able to continue gardening throughout the cold winter months too. The cold frame insulates the environment within from the freezing temperatures outside. Just stick to cold hardy veggies and herbs, in order to increase your chances of success.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- plexiglass panels
- cedar wood
- measuring tape
- marker
- cordless drill
- nails
- L brackets
- T brackets
- T-square
- X-acto knife
- 3/4″ #8 Robertson screws
- 3.5″ T-hinges
- 5 3/4″ handle
Since your raised garden bed has already been constructed, this projects is more about building the cold frame. The first step is to build the wooden side panels that fit onto your raised bed, on which the rest of the cold frame sits on. Next the door frames are assembled using the wood, screws and the brackets. Take extra care when drilling the brackets into place, to avoid splitting the wood.
The plexiglass is then cut to sit perfectly on top of each frame and firmly screwed into place. Finally a handle is attached to each door, before the frames can be fitted onto the removable cold frame with T hinges. Don’t worry, complete step by step plans and instructions are available to guide you. Time wise, an hour or less is required for this project.
