After you master the art of growing your own peas in your garden, you can move on to the next phase of your training. Just like I have shown you how to save your tomato seeds as well as how to save your strawberry seeds in past posts. I would love to continue on that track by showing you how to save your pea seeds too.

It is definitely not rocket science, but it helps when it comes to saving money buying more seeds or even just maintaining your favorite variety. Even better is the fact that once you have mastered these techniques, you can pretty much use them for any of your favorite pea and bean varieties. If you have no threat of rain in your area, you can safely leave the pods to dry as much as possible on the actual plant itself.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

• garden pea pods
• needle
• twine or string
• paper envelope
• ziploc bag
• container
• marker

The lazy gardeners, would probably opt for the easier method which involves pulling out the entire plant, and hanging it up to allow the seeds to dry. Alternatively, you can just pick up the individual pods and then hang those up to dry instead of the whole plant. After collecting your pods, thread your needle with the twine or string and then start adding the pods to the twine. Don’t forget to tie a knot on the end so that they don’t slide off.

When your seeds are dry, you can pop open the pods and collect the seeds into a container. Initially you want to store them in an envelope, this will help draw out any moisture that may still be left in them. After a few weeks you can then transfer the seeds to a small ziploc bag. To help you remember which is which, always mark your ziploc bags with the type of seed as well as the date.
