How To Save Bean Seeds From Your Garden

Did you know that it was seeds stored from ‘last season’, that Jack planted to grow the bean stalk? LOL. I think in previous posts I have already shown you how to save pea seeds, how to save tomato seeds and how to save & store strawberry seeds. Let’s continue on our seed saving quest with today’s post on how to save bean seeds.

As an avid gardener, it’s gardening tips and techniques like these that help us save money for our other gardening projects. Stay clear of hybrid seeds, they don’t store well when compared to open pollinated heirloom varieties. Your collected seeds can be saved for up to 4 years, which means that if you harvest enough seeds, you only have to go through this process once every 3 years. As a rule of thumb, I try to keep my saved seeds for 24 months only, for best germination rates.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

When selecting plants to save seeds from make sure that they are not weak and that they are also disease free. All your bean pods must be left to fully mature before harvesting, this process takes at least a month. After your seeds are harvested, let them dry for at least two weeks. The most important thing to remember is that the seeds need to be completely dry before you can store them. So patience is a virtue! 🙂
