It doesn’t matter if you have little or no space for establishing your garden, anymore. There are several ways to get around this lil’ problem and still be able to enjoy gardening. Do you remember the earlier posts on how to grow cabbages in plastic bags, how to grow potatoes in old tires and how to grow carrots in a soda bottle? Well, that’s the direction we’ll be heading in today’s post, as we discover how to grow carrots in a grow bag.

Generally, these are the type of container gardening techniques, that should be readily available to most of us avid gardeners. Just remember that the varieties you choose for your garden should differ from those for the containers. For example, shorter carrot varieties without pointy ends such as the Round, Oxheart and Royal Chantaney are preferred for the grow bags. When done correctly, you can expect to harvest about three pounds of carrots per bag.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

So unlike most other veggies in your garden, you don’t have to wait for the last frost, you can start your carrots a few weeks before. The fertilizer should be mixed in with the potting mix before planting. Sow your seeds on the surface, before covering with a thin layer of potting mix. Germination should occur within 14 to 21 days.

Keep the soil moist by watering thoroughly, throughout the germination period. I have tried covering the bags with garden fabric and found that they act like mulch helping to keep the moisture within. It is recommended that you thin out the seedlings and apply additional fertilizer every month or so. If all goes according to plan, they should be ready to harvest in just over two and a half months.
