There are some things in life, that everyone seems to enjoy. When it comes to beans, having so many options available is a godsend. I have already showed you how to grow navy beans, how to grow butter beans and how to grow black beans. I take it that you are ready for a quick lesson on how to grow kidney beans in your garden.
They are many kidney bean varieties for you to choose from. Personally I prefer the pole varieties, they tend to produce more beans for me than the bush ones. The bush ones however, are perfect for growing in containers in your greenhouse or out on the porch. As far as nutrients are concerned, kidney beans like most other beans are loaded with proteins. They are also an excellent source for magnesium as well calcium too.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- kidney beans---------------------- Advertisement ----------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------- - compost
- mulch
- trellis (optional)
- containers (optional)
- organic fertilizer (optional)
- inoculant powder (optional)
Wait until the last frost before direct sowing your kidney beans into an area with well drained soil in your garden. The ideal soil pH is between 6.0 to 7.0. Your spacing will be determined by whether you are growing bush varieties which need more space up to 8 inches between plants. The pole varieties on the end only require about 4 inches. Plant your seeds at least an inch deep and allow up to 2 weeks for germination.
Only water when the top layer of your soil has dried out, and try not to water the leaves. Always keep an eye out for fungal diseases, slugs, leafhoppers, beetles as well as aphids. Once again depending on the variety your beans should be ready for harvest 3 to 5 months after planting. Dried kidney beans can be stored in a cool dry place for a whole year without any issues.
