How To Make Mulch

If you call yourself a gardener, and you are still not applying mulch to your garden beds. This madness has to stop today. From growing artichokes, to growing kalettes and even growing parsnips it is vital that you use mulch. In today’s post we are going to take a look at how you can make your own mulch for your garden.

There are a few problems that you may face when it comes to mulching, especially if you stick to the dry grass mulches. These are mulches made from dry straw or hay. I have found that they don’t usually insulate your soil well enough, as a result you have more evaporation and it is also easier for weeds to grow through your mulch. On some windy days, the mulch can even blow away. LOL

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • straw, alfalfa or hay
  • large container
  • water
  • large rock
  • pitch fork
  • gloves

The issues mentioned above, have a simple fix. Instead of using dry mulch, all you have to do is soak it for a few days. The process itself is pretty simple. Just pack your dry grass into large containers like a garbage can, rain barrel or even an ICB tote. Sometimes I use an old metal drum, that sits in one corner of our garden.

Then you want to fill this container with water and place a heavy object inside like a weight or large rock. This will hold down the straw and prevent it from rising as it absorbs the water. Let it soak for 1 or 2 days, after which you can immediately apply it to your garden beds. It’s a few extra steps, but trust me you will notice the difference. 🙂
