Homemade Oat Milk Recipe

Sometimes I just sit down and wonder about some of these things? Like how did someone decide ‘hey you can make homemade almond milk‘? Especially when you can just go milk a cow or goat in your backyard. LOL Well, maybe not everyone has these animals on their homestead and that is how substitutes like this homemade oat milk came to be.

This is the perfect substitute for those who are not a fan of dairy products or who cannot have them. It is said to be more nutritious than other nut based milk. Make sure you are using real rolled oats and not cooking oats which has been processed. I have also recently found out that you can make different flavors, such chocolate or even strawberry. I am sure that will inspire you to try all your favorite flavors too.

  • medium bowl
  • strainer
  • nut milk bag
  • cheesecloth
  • water
  • fresh dates
  • vanilla
  • maple syrup
  • cane sugar
  • glass milk bottle

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1.

Add the oats to the bowl and cover
with water.

Step 2.

Soak for at least 20 minutes, but
preferrably over night.

Step 3.

Drain the water from the oats using your
strainer and give them a quick rinse.

Step 4.

Dump the oats into the blender, add
3 and half cups of water and process
for a maximum of 60 seconds at high speed.

Step 5.

Squeeze through your nut milk bag or strain
through a cheesecloth placed over your strainer.

Step 6. (Optional)

Your oat milk is ready, but unsweetened.
You can then decided to add your sweetner.

A few drops of vanilla or 1/2 tablespoons of maple syprup are sufficient for your sweetner. Do not skip the soaking process as it is necessary to remove excess phytic acid from the oats. Limiting the processing time in your blender, will prevent the oats from getting slimy. The leftover oats from straining can be used for baking or making pancakes. Since the oat milk always separates, make sure you always give it a good shake before using it. Store in your fridge and use within 5 days.
