Considering their many health benefits, it maybe wise to have a wide selection of nuts available to your family. We already grow peanuts in our garden and also have a walnut tree growing out back. I recently did some research on how to grow almonds trees from seeds.
Honestly, I was expecting the whole process to be a complicated one. However, it is actually pretty straight forward. The most important thing I learnt, was probably that I should only grow sweet almonds varieties as the bitter ones tend not to be edible. Did you know that? An almond tree can grow up to 33 feet tall, when fully grown?
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- almond seeds or seedlings
- large bowl
- nutcracker
- potting soil
- small pots
- nitrogen rich fertilizer
Most avid gardeners would prefer the challenge of growing from seed, than transplanting seedlings. Only organic seeds will germinate, make sure they are soaked overnight before cracking them slightly the next day. Throw away the moldy seeds, and plant the rest about an inch deep in potting soil filled pots. Place the pots in a sunlit location and water well until the seeds sprout.
When the seedlings are ready, you can then transplant to bigger pots or your backyard. Make sure to water heavily initially after transplant and then weekly there after. It will take up to 5 years before any edible fruit is produced. Meanwhile, take good care of your tree keeping an eye out for pests and diseases as well as removing any weeds.
