How To Grow Chickpeas

Although the official gardening season is over now, that still does not stop us from expanding our knowledge, right? In previous posts we looked at how to grow green beans, how to grow green peas and even how to grow snow peas. It is kinda weird that after all these years we still have not looked at how to grow chickpeas on this blog. LOL

Also commonly known as Garbanzo beans, their scientific name is Cicer arietinum. The history books tell us that their origins are somewhere in Southern Europe as well as India. Most people will grow theirs outside in their gardens, however they can also be grown in containers if you have limited space. Just like snap beans, you can pick the immature chickpeas and enjoy them raw. Actually a lot of people are now using them for sprouting these days.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Ideally you would want to plant the seeds directly into the ground after the last frost. However, there is one slight problem with this ‘ideal situation’. They require a long growing season, if you wait to long to plant, you may never harvest them. The solution then is to probably start seeds indoors before the last frost and then transplant the seedlings into your garden.

Make sure that when it is time for flowering and pod formation you provide them with enough water. Apply a layer of mulch to conserve water and prevent weed growth. The fix their own nitrogen, therefore there is no need to apply any fertilizer. Keep an eye out for aphids, bean beetles, flea beetles, leaf hoppers and mites. It will usually take about 100 days before they are ready to harvest.
