How To Grow Green Beans

Green beans are probably one of the only plants that can be found in almost every garden. We have grown grand pa’s pole beans in our garden in the past, very successfully I should say. I have since discovered that this was just one of the many types available. Hence I have decided to write this post on how to grow green beans in your garden.

It turns out that there are as many as four types of green beans which bush beans, pole beans, runner beans and yardlong beans. Each type has many varieties available also. I have personally grown the bush beans, runner and the pole beans which grow up to 10 feet high and require some sort of support system such as a trellis or teepee.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • green beans seeds
  • compost
  • trellis (optional)

As soon as your ground is over 60 degrees F, you can start planting your beans. The seeds are planted directly into the ground about 2 to 4 inches deep. Make sure that you apply at least an inch of compost to your soil and that it has a PH between 6.0 and 6.5. If you are planting pole beans, it is always easier to erect the trellis first before planting the seeds.

Water is only required at a rate of 1 to 1.5 inches per week, but keep an eye out for diseases that may affect your crop. These include Stem Anthracnose, Mosaic Virus, Bean Rust and Powdery Mildew. When to harvest your beans all depends on your personal preference. If you like them tender and soft then harvest them sooner than if you want bigger and tougher.
