As much as I love working outside in our backyard garden, I also really enjoy indoor container gardening. I think I once shared a post on how to grow your own microgreens a few months back. This is fast becoming my favorite ‘indoor’ gardening activity. As a result I had to learn how to make my own homemade diy sprouting jars.
The reason why you want to make your own jars, is because it is way cheaper than going to buy them online. Instead of spending $6 or more per jar, you can simply reuse some of the jars you already have. The only cost (again if you do not already have it) would be the mesh fabric. This should not cost your more than five bucks, and you will get enough fabric to make plenty of jars. As for what type of jars to use, it all comes down to what you have available or can afford on your budget.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- mason jars
- black or white mesh fabric
- scissors
- duct tape
- marker
- seeds
Step By Step Instructions
Step 1.
Make a template for your mesh, by taping some duct
tape onto the mesh and then tracing the edges of the lid.
Step 2.
Cut around the lines you traced with your marker to
make your template and your first mesh screen.
Step 3.
Peel off the duct tape and keep it so you can use it
to mark out more mesh circles for your jars.
Step 4.
Remove the lids on your jars and replace them with
your mesh circles.
Step 5
Screw on the lids and you now have sprouting jars.
When cutting out your mesh, it is easier if you first cut a square around the duct tape template. Then when you have a smaller manageable piece of mesh, you can trace around the round edges. For smaller seeds like alfafa, simply add more mesh circles so that you have two or three instead of just one under your lid. That way you can keep the seeds from falling out when you empty out the water.
