Homemade Dried Tomato Chicken Treats

Did you know that chickens love tomatoes, too? If you didn’t know, now you know! Over the years I have shared other treats such as the homemade suet cakes for chicken and the homemade frozen corn chicken treats. Your girls will love these homemade tomato chicken treats, just the same especially during the winter months.

If you were to ask me do chickens love fresh tomatoes, more than dried ones? I honestly could not answer, it is probably best to just respond that they love tomatoes. For the chickens you can use the over ripe tomatoes, however they tend to be mushy and difficult to handle. I usually have plenty of tomatoes, so my girls enjoy them fresh, even when dehydrated. LOL

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1.

Slice your tomatoes thinly on your
cutting board, with your knife.

Step 2.

Lay down the slices in a single
layer on the cookie sheet and leave
the sheets out in the sun to dry.

Step 3.

When dry carefully thread the string
or twine through the dried slices.

Step 4.

Hang the loaded string in your chicken
coop for your girls to enjoy. 🙂

It may take a few days for the slices to dry, if you are using the sun. A faster alternative would be to use a food dehydrator if you have access to one. Also when hanging the string in your coop, make sure that it is at a level where the girls can easily peck at the tomatoes without straining their little necks.
