My chickens are so lucky, they get an assortment of treats through out the year. I make so many things for them from homemade frozen corn chicken treats, homemade chicken flock block to diy chicken spa treatment treatment. Today, please allow me to share yet another which is this homemade suet cakes for chickens.

Most people are not aware that chickens actually enjoy suet cakes. When I make mine I dump quite a few things in them, most of which have health benefits for the chickens. If you make these during the summer months, they will help cool off your chickens. Otherwise, they do a great job as boredom busters too.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

• corn
• oatmeal
• chopped unsalted peanuts
• dry peas
• wheat berries
• lentils
• flax seeds (improves omega-3s in eggs)
• sunflower seeds (high in fat)
• pea sprouts
• microgreens (optional)
• oregano (optional)
• sage (optional)
• thyme (optional)
• muffin tin or shallow pan
• small saucepan

Place the saucepan on low heat and melt your coconut oil. Then you just slowly add everything else you want to put in your suet cakes. Just make sure everything is either ground or chopped. Otherwise you will end up having blocks that just easily break apart.

When everything is in there, you can then pour the mixture into the muffin tins. Make sure that you fill right to the top, there should be no issues regarding expansion. Carefully lift your tins and place in your freezer overnight. To remove the suet cakes, simply invert the tin and they should fall out. Now they are ready to be fed to your chickens and I am sure they will love them.
