It’s always lovely to see the beautiful snow covered landscape outside. However, slush from the snow inside the house is a definite NO NO! In a previous post I shared with you how to build this diy boot rack and this diy boot brush, all in an effort to keep the snow outside. In our home, that still was not enough so this year I will be adding this diy wood slat doormat too.
These are the simple beginner diy woodworking projects, that we all love. Usually it’s the measuring and cutting wood that frustrates most people, right? Well, you’ll be happy to hear that this project has very little of that ‘frustrating’ work. Although cedar wood, is often recommended for outdoor projects due to its durability, protecting it with some sort of wood finish will often extend it’s life and color for even longer.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- 1” x 2” x 3’ cedar boards
- 1” x 2” x 6’ cedar board
- tung oil
- 1 1/2” 34 finish nails 4D
- old rag
- chop saw
- power orbit sander
- sandpaper
- hammer
In order to save yourself some valuable time and energy, it is best to just purchase the majority of the cedar boards already pre-cut. The only cuts that would be left for you to do would be of the remaining cedar board as guided by the instructions. Next, the boards need to be sanded down before you can apply at least two coats of the tung oil. It is recommended that you wait 24 hours in between coats.
As with most wood working projects, when assembling the doormat start by building the frame and then you simply fill in the frame. It looks like you have to painstakingly hammer into place the boards one by one. I think I will cheat a little bit and test to see if I can use a cordless drill instead for this step. Who knows, I could save a finger nail or two from the wrath of the hammer. LOL
