This is not one of those lessons that they teach you at beginner gardening school. They will teach you things like how to compost horse manure and trench composting first, before they even introduce you to the idea. My aunt is the one who first introduced me to the idea. I then went ahead and did my research on how to compost weeds.
There are many different materials that you can throw into your compost. Actually, I am starting think that anything that is biodegradable can be added to your compost heat. You are probably wondering, how does one harvest weeds. Well, you have two options you could either pull them out by had or you could dig them out. I prefer to pull mine out when I am doing the weeding.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- compost bin
- weeds
- plastic bag (optional)
- bucket (optional)
- water (optional)
All right, so when it comes to composting weeds, it is recommended that you only compost those weeds that have not seeded yet. Otherwise you will encounter a situation were your seeds start to grow in your compost pile. There are several methods you can try if your weeds have already seeded, that will in essence kill the seeds so that they do not germinate whilst in your compost. For example, you can deploy hot composting or alternatively ferment the weeds in water.
