How To Grow Scallions

Don’t you just love it when, a simple name makes something sound more fancier than it really is. When you tell someone that you are growing tamarillos in your garden or growing vidalia onions in your garden. You immediately sound like an expert. On that ‘fancy’ note would you like to learn how to grow scallions?

Did you know that most onion varieties can be scallions, if you harvest them early. Also there is no really no difference between these and the infamous green or spring onions. If you are in the warmer climates, you can grow these through winter too. Often times, I prefer to use these over onions. Do not ask me why, I just do. OK! LOL

Here’s What You’ll Need:

As with most seeds for your garden, if you want a better harvest it is recommended that you start them off indoors a few weeks before the last frost and then transplant them later. The seeds will take anywhere between 1 to 2 weeks to germinate. Find a location that gets full sun and plant them using an in row spacing of 2 to 3 inches. Your rows should be between 1 to 2 feet apart.

When watering your scallions you might want to consider furrow irrigation. Also take care of the weeds and do not allow them to take over. Fertilizer should be applied before planting. Keep an eye out for damping off, downey mildew, onion smut, pink root rot, rust, cutworms, onion maggots, onion nematodes, slugs and thrips. At 6 to 8″ tall, your scallions will be ready for harvesting.
