For those of us who love trying out different gardening techniques, this is definitely something you should consider. Used tires can often be found for free in junk yards, therefore this is surely an affordable project. Here’s What You’ll Need:

Location, location, location as well as timing are vital for success with this method. The tires need to be in an area that gets at least six hours of sunlight a day. As for timing you want to plant after the last frost. Consider removing the top sidewall of the tire, in order to increase the planting area inside the tire. More space for gardening means, each tire can hold more onions.

After filling up your tires with soil, it is recommended that you plant the onion sets at least 4 inches apart and about an inch deep. Choose your sets carefully in order to have better odds when it comes to harvesting full size onions. Water well and remove any weeds as they break out of your garden soil. Get ready for a bumper harvest, when the stalks have dried up and fallen over.
