I know one of the main reasons why many love this blog, is because I always introduce you to interesting fruits and plants. Remember the posts on how to grow orangelos, how to grow silverbeet and how to grow yuzus? Well sit back and relax as you are now about to discover how to grow glass gem corn.
This has got to be one of the coolest corn varieties that you can grow in your garden. Apparently it’s origins can be traced back to ancient native American Indian times. Don’t you just love those rainbow colored kernels on the cobs? Unlike sweet corn, this variety is mainly grown to be popped as popcorn. However, it can also be grounded into cornmeal. There are some who take advantage of the brightly colored cobs, which they use as ornamental decorations.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
The ground work will be the same as for any other corn variety. Just make sure the location has full sun and is not exposed to too much wind. When you’re ready to plant after the last frost, you want your rows to be 30 inches apart and your seeds 6 to 12 inches apart within the rows. Germination should occur within 7 to 14 days. Do not over water your plants, which should be ready to harvest end of fall, when the husks start drying out and turning brown.
