Is it spinach or is it Swiss chard? If you are an avid vegetable gardener, you’ve probably had that question on your mind after you saw the featured photograph. I don’t know if you have already seen the posts on how to grow spinach and on how to grow Swiss chard? If you have, then you may already have most of the knowledge and skills required when it comes to how to grow silverbeet.
Well technically speaking both Silverbeet and Swiss Chard are from the same family, Beta Vulgaris. Generally, most tend to differentiate them by their location. Hence you tend to find those of us from the United States calling it Swiss Chard and those from down under (Australia and New Zealand) referring to it as Silverbeet. However, others use the term Silverbeet for the green with white stems and the green with colored stems or veins i.e. crimson, red and yellow, are Swiss chard.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- silverbeet seeds
- seedling trays or punnets and a saucer
- potting mix
- shovel
- compost or aged manure
- liquid fertilizer
- snail pellets
- crushed egg shells (optional)
- lime (optional)
The compost has to be worked into the soil before sowing can begin. Also test your soil pH, that will help you decide whether to apply the lime or not. The easiest method involves direct sowing your seeds into the garden in rows one feet apart. The in row spacing should be between 14 to 16 inches and plant your seeds about 1/4 inch deep. When watered well, the seeds should germinate within a few days.
If you end up with more than one seedling per station, it is recommended that you thin out your plants. Fertilizer is first applied to the seedlings at half strength initially and then you can apply at full strength every 14 days. Also keep an eye out for snails as they may damage your plants. Instead of direct sowing your seeds, you also have the option to start your seeds in seedling trays (usually indoors) and then transplant into the garden beds.
