How To Clean Cast Iron Without Soap

My grandma always used to say, a kitchen without cast iron cookware is not really a kitchen to be proud of as a woman. I took that to heart and have always made sure my kitchen has at least one full set. In previous post, we have looked at various cleaning solutions such as the diy toilet cleaning bombs, homemade fabric softener recipe and the diy liquid laundry soap. Today I decided to share the easiest way to clean cast iron, without using any soap.

Cast iron is simply one of the best surfaces to cook on. When it is well seasoned you can expect it to evenly heat up whatever you are cooking. Even better is that you can use it in your oven as well as on the stove stop. However, you must by all means avoid cleaning it using soap as it is very porous. The soapy flavor may soak in and end up being baked into your cookware when you use it.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • kosher salt
  • vegetable oil
  • paper towel or paper plate
  • wooden spatula or soft dry cloth

The cleaning process is pretty simple and straight forward. The first step is to use the wooden spatula or soft dry cloth and the kosher salt to scrape away any food left on the cooking surface. Once clean, you can finish up by drizzling a few drops of vegetable oil and then place a sheet of paper towel or a paper plate inside before storing away.

It is recommended that you keep your cast iron, away from the dishwasher as well as avoid using harsh cleaners or metal scouring pads. The only exception is when you try to use the method above but the surface is rusty or excessively dirty. Only then can you pick up a non metallic scrubber and mild dish soap to remove any rust or dirt. This should be your last resort though, try not to make it an everyday solution.
