DIY Soil Sifter

Every garden will need a variety of tools, in order to be efficient and productive. Remember when we built this diy trommel compost sifter a few weeks back? It’s sole purpose is to sift the compost, although we could use if for the soil as well I would rather build a separate diy soil sifter or screen to take care of that.

There is actually a lot more diy gardening tools, that you can build in your in your backyard. Most of the time you are looking for durability as well as simplicity. This tool fits perfectly into both those categories. You can even build it from materials left over from your other projects. It should not take you more than an hour to assemble one of these for your garden.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Step By Step Instructions:

Step 1.

Measure, cut and mark your 2x4s that will make the frame.
You want 4 x 2 feet long and 4 x 3 feet long pieces.

Step 2.

Construct the frame, by nailing the sides
together to form a rectangular box.

Step 3.

Place the chicken wire over the frame and use the
tin snips to cut the required length.

Step 4.

Use the staples to attach the chicken wire to
the top side of the frame.

Step 5.

Nail the other set of 2x4s on top of the chicken
wire, just make sure that they are horizontal.

There, you are done. Now you can place this over a wheel barrow or a large container and use it to sift your soil. The extra layer of 2x4s will make the sifter easier to handle as well as allow it to sit comfortably on top of any wheel barrow. If you want to save some ‘snipping’ time, measure the width of your chicken wire and then use that as the width of your sifter
