DIY Trommel Compost Sifter

It goes without saying that every garden needs extra organic nutrients. That is why you will find earlier posts on how to compost, diy compost and diy compost on this blog. Once you have successfully made your compost, you are going to need this diy trommel compost sifter.

Without a doubt there are easier and simpler homemade compost sifter designs, but we decided to build this one instead. I like the idea of sifting your compost so that you remove any coarse compost materials that has not decomposed as well as any other trash or debris that does not belong in your garden bed. Some sifters have hand cranks, this particular one does not.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

    -------------------------------------------------------------------
  • large bicycle rims
  • rollers and bolts
  • 8′ dimensional lumber
  • wire
  • chain cutter
  • tape measure
  • wheelbarrow

The first task at hand, is to remove all the spokes from the rims. There are a few ways to do this, but the easiest is probably to use some sort of heavy duty cutter similar to chain cutters. Measure the diameter of the inside of your rims and use that measurement to determine how much hardware cloth you need for your sifter.

After attaching the hardware cloth to your rims using wires, you can move on to construction of the roller box. After the rollers have been installed, the drum should rotate freely on them. The box will sit in a wheel barrow, which will collected the sifted compost. You can just wheel it to your garden and apply the compost as needed.
