Without the right nutrients, our plants and veggies would not be able to produce bumper harvests. That is why it is usually not enough to just plant with compost and not apply any fertilizer. I have already shown you how to make homemade organic fertilizer and also homemade fish emulsion fertilizer in previous posts. Today, we will be looking at making this diy bone meal fertilizer.
As with all homemade fertilizers, this would probably be a better option for you than those store bought ones. Even the ones that they label as being organic. I don’t have a preference for the type of bones you can use, but any type of bone should work. Of course, the bigger the bones the more fertilizer you are going to be able to make. This slow release fertilizer provides phosphorous, calcium as well as nitrogen for your plants.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- dried bones
- hammer
- flat rock or concrete pavement
- tarp
- ziploc bags
- crockpot or large stockpot (optional)
Step By Step Instructions:
Step 1.
Place your flat rock or surface on top of the tarp.
Step 2.
Place your bones on the surface and start breaking them apart with your hammer until they become a powder.
Step 3.
If you are not applying the bone meal into your garden immediately, then you can store it in ziploc bags until you are ready to use it.
In order to make your bones brittle and easier to break apart. It is recommended that you use them to make bone broth in your crockpot or large stockpot first. However, make sure that you leave them out in the sun before using them to make the bone meal. Otherwise, if the bones are wet, you will have a hard time trying to break them with your hammer.
