DIY Fish Emulsion Fertilizer

Why is it that so many weird things are good for your garden plants? Remember the post on how to use banana peels as fertilizer and then the one on how to use eggs as fertilizer? Then there is fish… did you know you could make your own diy fish emulsion fertilizer in your backyard?

I have to admit that most homemade fertilizers, tend to be pretty easy to make. This one is simple too, but since you are dealing with raw fish, it can be extremely stinky. As you wait for the fish to decompose and release the good nutrients, try keep the bucket in a little corner of the garden. Otherwise, your family may disown you and throw you out with your ‘fish fertilizer’. Ha ha haaa.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------
  • sawdust
  • 5 gallon plastic bucket with lid
  • window screen
  • garden rake or spatula
  • plastic container

At the bottom of the bucket, you are going to need a layer of brown material to absorb the extra nitrogen released by this process. Instead of sawdust, you could also try grass clippings, hay or even dried leaves. The fish scraps are added on top of that layer, followed by the molasses.

For the next step, the contents of the bucket have to be mixed thoroughly. A few layers of sawdust on top, will help contain the nasty fish smell. The window screen goes on before the cover to keep the flies out. Open the lid and mix up everything inside every two days for the first 14 days. The fertilizer should be ready for use in about a month or so.
