Homemade Bone Meal Fertilizer

There is a famous saying that goes something like this… give a dog a bone and have a friend for life, right? LOL Just don’t quote me on that one. Have you tried using the compost tea or homemade all natural miracle grow in your garden yet? Then maybe it is time you learn how to make bone meal fertilizer, for your plants.

Yep, you can turn your food scraps, which in this case are bones into fertilizer. All those fish, chicken, pork as well as beef bones can be turned into bone meal. Bone meal contains many nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorous, calcium and potassium. In order to release these nutrients, it needs to decompose. It does this slow and steady over time. However, make sure your soil is on the acidic side with a pH below 7, otherwise the nutrients will not be released.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • bones
  • baking sheet
  • water
  • plate
  • mortar and pestle

After your meals, make a habit of collecting all the bones. If you need to store them until you have collected enough use the freezer. The bones will need to be sterilized. The best way to do this is on a baking sheet, broil for about 15 minutes. Then you simmer in water for 5 to 8 hours, any fat or meat still attached to the bones should easily fall off after that.

Next, is the drying process will take about 30 days. Place them on a plate, in a area that is well ventilated. Crush the brittle bones, in your mortar and pestle. This part often tends to get a little sweaty, just a few bones at a time will make it easier to pound them into a powder. Add to your compost tea or use as is, by placing some in the planting hole or working it into your soil. Store in an air tight glass jar or bag.
