Are your chickens molting? There’s absolutely no need to stress about it. It’s a natural process that most chickens have to live through every year. In earlier posts I have already shown you how to make homemade chicken flock block, homemade chicken scratch recipe and even these homemade chicken molt muffins. So what can you do when your chickens start molting?

When it comes to tips for raising backyard chickens, I am one of those people who is always ready and willing to learn. You’ll know your chickens are molting when they start losing their feathers from top to bottom, starting with their heads. Experts say, this usually occurs the first winter after they are at least a year old. This process takes about two to three months, that is counting from when the hens start losing their feathers to when they grow new ones. They maybe a decrease in egg production, during this period too.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

The proteins listed above are considered the best supplements for your chickens during the molting season. You don’t have to do anything special with them, just add them to their feed at least once everyday. I usually crush the nuts to make it easier for the chickens to eat them, otherwise we just add mealworms from our farm. It’s probably best to mix and match the different proteins and not give them the same thing everyday for weeks or months.
