We have been lucky to have fresh eggs daily on our homestead for many years now, I could not tell you the price of a dozen eggs even if my life depended on it. The first step of course was getting the right egg laying chicken breed and then we built them these diy easy clean chicken nesting boxes. I later discovered this amazing homemade chicken layer feed recipe, that I would like to share with you today.
Not only is it super easy to make, this feed is made from 100% organic grains. This way you know that your chickens are eating the healthiest grains available out there. This particular recipe will make about eight and a half pounds of feed. If you need more or even less, you can just halve, double or even triple the quantities. Oh I almost forget to state the obvious, making homemade feed is going to save you a lot of money in the long run, try it if you haven’t done so already.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- 4 cups hard red wheat
- 4 cups black sunflower seeds
- 2 cups soft white wheat
- 4 cups oat groats or regular naked oats
- 2 cups millet
- 2 cups kamut
- 1 cup sesame seeds
- 2 cups whole or cracked corn or even popcorn
- 1 cup lentils
- 1/4 cup kelp granules
- 1/2 cup brewers yeast
- 5 gallon plastic bucket or garden pale
- oyster shells (mixed in or on the side)
- brown bag (optional)
Step By Step Instructions:
Step 1.
Measure out all the ingredients as stated above.
Step 2.
Add all the ingredients to your plastic bucket.
Step 3.
Mix everything together thoroughly using your hands to dig in and bring everything in the bottom up to the top.
That’s all there is to it. If you are not going to use all of it at once, you can simply put the lid on and store it away until needed. If you have extra brown bags, you can store your feed in there for longer periods of time. Just make sure that the bag is sealed at the top and you store it away in a cool dry place. My ‘girls’ absolutely love this feed, yours should too! 🙂
