How To Prune Everbearing Raspberries

There is no cheating the system, if you want your plants to bear more fruit or get bushier, you probably have to prune them. In previous posts we have looked at how to prune your fruit trees, how to prune cucumbers and how to prune blackberries. Today we will be expanding our ‘pruning skills’ as we explore how to prune everbearing raspberries in your garden.

This is one of those gardening skills, that you’ll master with practice. As they always say (whoever THEY are)… practice makes perfect. There are two methods you can choose from, as I will explain below. Whatever you do, just make sure that you are dealing with everbearing raspberry varieties only such as Carolines, Ruby, Amity, Heritage, Redwing, Canby or Summit. If you experiment with the ‘traditional’ varieties, you may end up having no fruit year after year. LOL!

Here’s What You’ll Need:

The first method involves pruning the raspberries in spring. Make sure you have your protective clothing and glasses on before you get started. The goal is to ‘prune off’ the part of the cane that has produced fruit the previous year. Since you practically have to snip off the ends of every single cane, this is going to eat up a huge chunk of your time. The perfect ‘prune’ will leave some green at the end of the cane.

The method above allows for two harvests a year, the second method is easier but leaves you with one HUGE fall harvest only. Spring is when the pruning should be done, but this time you remove all the canes from the previous year. These are usually the canes that you find closest to the ground, just clip away at them with your pruner or hedge clippers. This way you can quickly get the job done and move on to other pressing garden tasks.
