When it comes to gardening, there are two three that I always dread. Weeding, pruning and watering. They are all vital to the growth of your plants, take for example pruning tomatoes or pruning pepper plants else. On that note, do you know how to prune blackberries?
These are the simple gardening techniques that you need to learn, that will elevate you from beginner to expert level. With that elevation, you will also find yourself with bountiful harvests. So why would you want to prune your blackberries? Well, by doing that you are able to promote the health of your plants whilst also encouraging them to produce more fruit.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- blackberry bushes
- pruning shears
There are two important things that you should know when you decide to prune your blackberries. You have to do it the right way and at the right time. So when is the right time? This job has to be done twice a year, in early spring and then late summer. The first time you are just pruning the tips and then the second time is the clean up process.
With tip pruning you want to clip off the tips of the canes. Also remove any diseased or dead canes. You want to prune your bush to about 2 feet tall, if it it is still shorter than that just clip off an inch of the canes. Clean up pruning on the other hand is done after fruiting, you want to remove all the two year old canes starting from the bottom. They wont be producing anymore fruit.
