In this day and age, there is absolutely no excuse for not having an effective waste management system even in off grid living situations. There are many options at your disposal including the popular diy composting toilet system. If you insist on using a flushing toilet, then you may want to look at this diy recycled tires septic tank.
I was first designed municipal department of the city of Uberlândia in Brazil. It is a system that reuses as many as 8 old truck tires per tank. These used tires can often be obtained for free, saving you money and also solving your solid waste disposal problem. Each tank is divided into two sections, in one section is where decomposition takes place and the other one acts as a holding tank. This is indeed an ingenuous low cost effective solution, me thinks.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- used truck tires
- 5/8 screws
- 4.8 mm iron bar
- 6 mm iron bar
- 5/8 wide rim washers
- cement
- medium sand
- gravel #5
- aluminum foil tape
- 100mm PVC 90° quarter bend
- 100mm PVC tube bar
The perfect location for your septic tank is about 18 feet from your house, directly in line with your toilet but at a lower level. Also take into consideration the distance from any water source, which should be at least 150 feet. The tires are screwed together and sealed using aluminum foil tape. Dig your trench 4 1/2 feet deep, 5 feet wide and 12 feet long.
Mix the sand, cement and gravel to make the concrete to mold the rings and reinforced concrete caps. Lower your modules in their trench and seal with the caps and install the PVC fittings. The base of the trench should have a layer of gravel. The only thing I am not a fan of with this system is the amount of digging, but I guess you could plan to do it gradually over a few days or weeks.
