Got little or no space? Don’t fret! By learning how to grow potatoes in shopping bags, you will still able to grow them, even if you have limited space. In previous posts, we have covered how to grow potatoes in reusable bags, how to grow potatoes in laundry baskets and even how to grow potatoes the no dig way. Feel free to use those other methods, however there is a slight breakthrough with this particular ‘shopping bags’ method.
Up until I discovered this potato growing method, I have always grown them starting from the bottom up, gradually filling the container with soil. However, you now only require one seed potato at the top of the bag and you can grow potatoes this way up to five times a year, starting in late February up to end the end of August. Another added advantage of using this method is that you’ll have an extended harvest period. Furthermore, I have also found that disease and pests that affect your potatoes as they grow, seem to be more contained this way.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- seed potatoes
- shopping bags
- compost
- potting soil
- organic fertilizer
- egg cartons (optional)
Depending on the time of year that you are growing your potatoes in shopping bags, it is recommended that you allow them to go through the chittings process first. This extra step allows for a fast growing and denser crop. When the chit sprouts are at least an inch long, they can be planted at least five inches deep, with the sprouts always facing upward.
The shopping bags should be filled with soil and compost to about an inch below the top of the bag. The bag is placed in a sunny location for the entire growing period. Make sure to water and fertilize regularly until harvest time. Once again, depending on the planting date, your potatoes will be ready for harvest anywhere from 10 to 20 weeks.
