One of my favorite household chores is doing the laundry, ummmm noooot! LOL. Well in the past we learnt that we could grow potatoes in upside down buckets, grow potatoes in wood pallets or even grow potatoes in old tires here. Imagine my delight when I discovered that we could also grow potatoes in laundry baskets?
You should be able to use this method for pretty much all the different potato varieties. Although laundry baskets are affordable, I would rather use an old one that is on its last legs. Everything else you need for this gardening project, is already available in your garden. This is one of those fun projects, that you can include the whole family.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- laundry baskets
- potting soil
- compost
- seed potatoes
- sharp knife
After acquiring your laundry basket, the process itself is pretty similar to the ‘potato tower’ method. The goal is to gradually build up your basket over time. Starting with a layer of soil and compost about 2 inches at the bottom. You go ahead and plant your seed potatoes and cover with more soil.
The goal is to simulate the ‘hilling’ that is often seen in most gardens. As the potatoes grow, you add on more layers until you fill up the basket. It is recommended that, you water well and slowly to allow the water to really soak into the soil. Your estimated yield per basket is about 8 to 10 pounds.
