How To Grow Potatoes In Reusable Bags

What is it about potatoes, that makes most people love them? Maybe it’s the fries or perhaps the mashed potatoes, my guess is as good as yours. In previous posts, I have shown you how to grow potatoes in old tires, how to grow potatoes in crates and even how to grow potatoes in wood pallets. In today’s post we take a look at how to grow potatoes in a reusable bag.

I’m always on the look out for new potato growing techniques, to add to my gardening bag of tricks. I understand that there are actually some reusable potato growing bags, available for purchase in stores. We are all about saving money here on the homestead, that is why we would rather use reusable grocery bags or coffee sacks. The important thing to always remember is that which ever bag you choose, should have good drainage.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

I give my bags a quick wash first before the planting can begin. Each bag has to have its sides rolled down, until it is about 6 inches deep. Your initial garden soil depth, before planting is around 4 inches. Make sure you plant all your seed potatoes with the sprouting buds facing up. The initial soil cover is only 2 inches. Water regularly and keep adding soil until the sides are fully rolled up. The potatoes should be ready for harvest in just 12 to 13 weeks.
