Here’s What You’ll Need:

As I’ve already stated above the mushroom species you select will determine your success with this method. Then you can decide whether you want to purchase or grow your own spawn. Your straw bales must first be broken apart and the straw itself chopped into smaller manageable pieces. Washing the straw with dish soap is optional, although highly recommended as it may reduce contamination.

The straw should then be pasteurized, this involves heat treating the straw above 65 degrees C for at least an hour or two. You can heat the water and then dunk the straw in it to treat it. After allowing the straw to cool down, you can then inoculate your logs. Your mushrooms should be ready for harvest anytime between 10 to 21 days after inoculation.
